Campania

Locality

Campania is located on the western side of Italy, roughly halfway between the north and the south of Iraly. There are three gulfs to be found here: the Gulf of Gaeta, the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf or Salerno, all of which offer fabulous beaches.

The Gulf of Naples includes three of the most beautiful and romantic islands: Ischia, Capri and Prodica.

The inland area of Campania is very high. It includes the Lutcanian Apennine and Campano Preapennine mountain ranges.

Naples is Italy's third largest city; a stunning sprawling city.

Pompeii is located in this region.

This region also encompasses the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento, plus the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida. Capri is said to be the most romantic island in the world.

History

Campania was first inhabited by the Etruscans and then the Greeks.

Many of the coastal towns were very important during the 12th and 13th centuries.

During the late 18th century, Naples was included in the "must see" itinerary of any notable aristocrat.

Attractions

The island of Ischia has some of the world's largest thermal spas. Paestum has three, almost intact, Greek temples.

Naples has a fascinating Spanish quarter, an excellent National Archaeological Musuem and the sunset around the Bay of Naples is magical. The House of Vettii at Pompeii has some stunning frescoes.

Food and Drink

Naples lays claim to be the place where the pizza originated and the home of spaghetti.

The Neopolitan pizza is a mixture of local produce, giving a true flavour of the area: mozzarella, fresh tomato, basil and sometimes anchovies on the top.

Fresh fish is also popular in the region, with sea bream being a speciality.

Naples is world famous for it's delicious ice cream.

The pastries in Naples are also excellent, sfogliatelle (pastry filled with ricotta and candied peel) is a local favourite.

The region has 19 DOC labels. It offers stunning wines including Lacrima Christi and Taurasi.

Limoncello is the region's famous lemon liqueur, which is made throughout the country, although Campania's is claimed to taste the best.

Another famous drink is the Neopolitan coffee which is the strongest in the world.

Major airports in the Campania region
