Car Importation

Driving with non-Italian registration

As a member of the EU you may import your car into Italy using its own original licence plates.
You can retain it in Italy indefinitely so long as you maintain its home country tax fully paid up, including a current MOT as required.
However, you may not stay in Italy longer than six months in any one calendar year.
Your car must also be insured in its country of registration under EU Law.
This can give you problems with insurance. Some companies will offer cover but read the small print.

Registering your vehicle in Italy

If you wish to import the car and register it in Italy, it must first be registered and then entered onto the PRA. To do this, the owner must be in possession of the original (or true copy) of the foreign registration document, which must be filed with the Bureau of Civil Motoring Ispettorato della Motorizzazione Civile. Entry of the vehicle onto the Public Motoring Register Pubblico Registro Automobilistico (PRA), must be carried out at the Provincial Office of the ACI Automobile Club of Italy, which manages the PRA in the province where the holder of the registration document lives, within 60 days of its date of issue.

The following documents are needed:

  • a photocopy of the registration document issued by the foreign state of origin of the vehicle
  • a copy of the Italian registration document
  • a photocopy of the purchaser's identity/recognition document
  • a certificate of residence or a declaration in lieu thereof if the residence is not stated on the document produced
  • a declaration of ownership, authenticated by a notary and stating that the vehicle has not been entered in another PRA registry
