Emilia-Romagna
Locality
One of Italy's largest regions, it is located centrally in the country acting as the crossroads of the north and south.
The Po valley runs along the north of the region, the Po delta in the northeast - an area of outstanding natural beauty and wildlife sanctuary known as the "Italian Camargue".
The region's Adriatic coast offers many stunning beaches, to the south of the region are the Apennines, where many ski resorts are found.
History
The region has been one of the most prosperous in Italy. The main industry being agriculture with cereals, pig farming and cattle featuring strongly.
As the region has been wealth for many centuries, there are many historical treasures to be viewed.
Attractions
Bologna, with one of the oldest universities in the world founded in 1088, has a strong medieval theme to it. It has a brick built church, San Petronio, with two huge towers (which both lean).
Parma offers excellent restaurants, stunning opera and the Romanesque Duomo with painted dome.
Rimini lies on the Adriatic coast and offers miles of beaches. It claims to be Europe's largest seaside resort.
Food and Drink
The world famous parma ham and parmesan cheese have their home in this region. The popular bolognese pasta sauce originated here.
The wine Lambrusco comes from Modena. The region also produces an excellent dry white and a robust red.
Major airports in the Emilia-Romagna region
Bologna's Guglielmo Marconi is located about 5km from the city.
The southeast of the region is served by Forli airport.
