Locality
The island is located of the southern most tip of mainland Italy. It is the Mediterranean's largest and most populated island.
History
The island has a fascinating history: the Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans and the Italian jet set have all had an influence on the island's culture.
Attractions
There are many undiscovered beautiful beaches.
The hillside town of Taormina has an impressive medieval quarter; it was popular with the English aristrocracy in the 19th century. It has many notable monuments. There is an all year round atmosphere to the town - there are many restaurants, cafes, golf and a summer film festival.
The beautiful town of Cefalu is one of the prettiest in the Mediterranean.
The property on offer is similar to Tuscany but at a fraction of the prices.
Off the north coast of the island are the seven Aeolian Islands, with stunning coves, Greek ruins and some of the best snorkelling in the Mediterranean.
Food and Drink
The cuisine in Sicily is a mix of Italian and Arab.
Fresh fish, particularly tuna and swordfish, and vegetables feature strongly. Pasta con le sarde, pasta with sardines, raisins, pine nuts and saffron is a local favourite.
The Sicilian desserts are exceptionally good: cassata (sponge cake with ricotta and glace fruits), pignolata (deep-fried dough covered in honey), ice cream and sorbets.
Sicily produces excellent Marsala (dessert wine) plus several excellent white wines and full-bodied reds.
