Venice, the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia
Locality
The north of the Veneto region borders with the south Tyrol with the magnificent Dolomites where Lake Garda can be found and the famous ski resort of Cortina d'Amprezzo.
The rest of the region is a vast, flat delta where many rivers, lagoons and numerous seaside resorts can be found.
The whole area has many interesting hill towns, orchards, vineyards and stunning villas.
The Friuli-Venezia Giulia region is located in the north-east of Italy with Austria lying to the north and Slovenia making up almost all of the eastern border.
History
The Romans and Venetians left behind in the region a wonderful legacy of culture.
Attractions
Venice is the main city in the Veneto region with it's unique waterways. It has over 5,000 stunning villas and palaces. Also famous for the Bridge of Sighs, the Doges' Palace, the Tialto bridge and St Mark's Square. A gondola ride is the best way to view the architecture. Venice holds a carnival each February.
To west of Venice is the university town of Padua, one of the oldest in the region. The medieval Padua university houses Galileo's lectern. The vast Della Valle Square is the largest in Europe and the fabulous Renaissance Basilica of St Anthony: a popular pilgrim destination. The shopping is also excellent.
Veneto second largest city is Verona, famously mentioned in "Romeo and Juliet". Verona holds wonderful opera's in it's arena. The beautiful Renaissance garden Giardino Giusti is worth a visit.
Trieste is the capital city of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region and the main port on the Adriatic. It has a charming old quarter full of Art Nouveau and neo-classical architecture.
40km north of Trieste is Udine, a small city and considered by the Italians as one of the best places to live.
Food and Drink
The Veneto region is famous for fresh fish, rice, polenta, cheese and cold meats including prosciutto ham.
Popular local sweets include pandoro from Verona and tiramisu from Venice.
The Friuli-Venezia Giulia region as a strong central European influence, including such surprises as sauerkraut.
Almost a fifth of all Italy's wines are produce in Veneto. Over 20 labels have DOC status. There are reds, whites and sparkling wine available. Most of the wine production in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia is white.

Treviso airport is only 40km from Venice.
Trieste has its own airport.
Verona can easily be reached from Brescia airport.
